National Museum of the Royal Navy Portsmouth

The "National Museum of the Royal Navy", located in the historic dockyard in Portsmouth, is one of the leading maritime museums of the country. It offers you the opportunity to see, touch, hear, even smell the history of the Royal Navy through a rich collection of artefacts and award-winning permanent exhibitions.

You can see three of the most important warships ever built:

Admiral Lord Nelson´s "HMS victory", Queen Victoria´s "HMS Warrior 1860" and Henry VIII´s favourite, the 500-year old "Mary Rose", which sank off Porthsmouth in 1545 and was dramatically raised in 1982.

Besides this there are four exhibition galleries you can visit:

  1. The Victory Gallery
  2. The Nelson Gallery
  3. The Sailing Navy Gallery
  4. The Twentieth Century Gallery

You will be able to see treasures from the last 350 years, e.g.: the Life Mask taken from Nelson´s face in 1800 or the first Victoria Cross ever awarded in 1856, have a go on the "Merlin Helicopter" simulator or benefit from interactives or multimedia shows like "Trafalgar", a walk-through experience, which brings the battle of Trafalgar vividly to life.

They also offer "Discovery Visits" for schools, which include art workshops, storytelling, role-playing, etc., special activities for families, like various workshops or the" NMRN backbag", which contains guides and activities to one of three themes ("Dockyard Detectives", "Working Hard at the Dockyard" or "Dockyard Code Crackers"), as well as programs specifically for students.
